A South Korean industrial designer has occur up with a satirical solution for “smartphone zombies” who are not able to take their eyes away from their monitor very long enough to halt them selves strolling into a wall or other obstacle.

Paeng Min-wook, 28, has designed a robotic eyeball he has dubbed “The Third Eye”, which obsessive cellular telephone people can strap to their foreheads so they can search personal injury-totally free on the go.

The unit opens its translucent eyelid every time it senses the user’s head has been lowered to appear at a smartphone. When the user comes inside of one particular to two metres of an obstacle, the machine beeps to warn of the impending danger.

“This is the seem of foreseeable future mankind with three eyes,” Paeng, a postgraduate in innovation layout engineering at the Royal University of Artwork and Imperial College or university London, informed Reuters as he demonstrated use of The 3rd Eye all around Seoul.

“As we can not just take our eyes off from smartphones, the added eye will be essential in foreseeable future.”

Paeng’s invention takes advantage of a gyro sensor to measure the oblique angle of the user’s neck and an ultrasonic sensor to estimate the length in between the robotic eye and any hurdles. Both equally sensors are connected to an open-resource one-board microcontroller, with battery pack.

Paeng’s demonstration of the unit in Seoul this week garnered notice from passersby.

“I assumed he looked like an alien with an eye on his forehead,” Seoul resident Lee Okay-jo explained. “These days quite a few young people can get into incidents while applying their cell telephone. This would be very good for them.”

Paeng stated The 3rd Eye was intended as a warning, not a genuine solution for smartphone addicts who will never pay interest to where they are heading.
