Indie game publisher Kongregate has established a $10 million publishing fund to expand its PC and console lineup.
The company, which built up its reputation as a web and mobile game platform and publisher, has recently made its first steps into the PC and console market with the launch of GRIDD: Retroenhanced on Steam and Xbox One.
As reported by Venturebeat, the new fund will give the company the financials means to further expand its cross-platform publishing efforts, though it might also be used to make other investments.
The news comes shortly after Kongregate was acquired by Swedish entertainment giant MTG for $55 million, and company CEO Emily Greer said the new fund was made possible thanks to that deal.
The co-founder also explained this doesn’t mean Kongregate is moving away from the mobile and browser business, but rather that the company now has “more leeway to make investments beyond what we were doing before.”
“Our mission since the founding of Kongregate has been to help independent developers succeed. We feel that it’s important to look beyond mobile and browser free-to-play since there are so many developers developing for the PC and paid game markets,” continued Greer.
“And like on mobile they’re struggling to break through with so many games being released. That’s the kind of market where a publisher really has a chance to make a difference.”
